CFFC Match Day results: Kai Orine, Isaac Trumble pick up Outstanding Wrestler belts as NC State downs Princeton and Rutgers
Wolfpack claim two impressive victories at Sunday's "Jersey Jostle," live on UFC FIGHT PASS.
TOMS RIVER, New Jersey – North Carolina State University, the six-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions, enjoyed an incredible afternoon of success at Sunday's "Jersey Jostle," taking home two team victories and a pair of CFFC Match Day Outstanding Wrestler belts in back-to-back duals that streamed live on UFC FIGHT PASS from RWJBarnabas Health Arena.
It was Wolfpack 141-pounder Kai Orine who took home the individual award for team's early 34-6 win over the Princeton Tigers, while heavyweight Isaac Trumble claimed the belt later in the day in NC State's scrappy 23-14 victory against the No. 18-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
Against Princeton, NC State looked dominant, winning eight out of 10 matches, including six athletes scoring bonus points for their team. But it was the early spirited output of sixth-year senior Orine, a two-time All-American, who put up 18 points in a major decision win over Jake Mann to take home the award.
With the belt draped over his shoulder, Orine said high output is exactly what he expects to provide every time he competes.
"We kind of drill that at practice, kind of instill that culture and have that identity on the mat," Orine said. "You're only out there seven minutes, so use every minute you can to wrestle, and yeah, just make the most of every minute, try to score as many points as possible, and just push the pace."

Meanwhile, Rutgers forced the Wolfpack to dig a bit deeper for the win, allowing NC State to claim just six of the 10 matches there. It all came down to the final division, with Rutgers needing a pin to force the result to be decided by a tiebreaker. However, the dual was locked up with No. 7-ranked Trumble's 2-0 win at heavyweight over No. 4-ranked Yaraslau Slavikouski, a returning All-American, and the performance earned the redshirt junior the day's second OW belt.
Going 2-0 on the day, with both victories coming against ranked opposition, Trumble said he's hoping to use the results as a launching point to a successful campaign at heavyweight.
"I'm pumped," Trumble said after receiving the belt. "It's a great weight class – arguably the toughest weight class in the country – a lot of world medalists, and I'm one of those. I felt good at 97 kilos at Olympic Trials, and I'm trying to keep that momentum going all the way through the season."
