Frank Wells ready to unleash brutality at CFFC 134: 'Expect violence'

Veteran "Chopper" takes on undefeated newcomer on Friday, August 16 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City.

Frank Wells is always excited to step in the cage and compete, but after being forced to withdraw from a planned interim title fight earlier this year, he's absolutely itching to throw hands (and feet and elbows and knees) at CFFC 134.

"I'm extremely excited," Wells said. "I haven't had a fight in about eight months. I was supposed to fight a few months ago, took an injury, then I was trying to get on another card, so I've just been, like, chomping at the bit. Ready to get fighting again."

Wells (5-3 MMA, 5-3 CFFC) gets that opportunity on Friday, August 16, when he takes on promotional newcomer David Mgoyan (4-0 MMA, 0-0 CFFC) in a featured featherweight clash. The contest streams live on UFC FIGHT PASS from New Jersey's Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City.

Wells was originally expected to face Roman Kurashvili at the event, but when his opponent withdrew, "Chopper" was willing to take on anyone the promotion could find. Mgoyan answered the call on two-weeks' notice. While it may be a short time to prepare for a new opponent, Wells said he was happy to accept the challenge.

"Two weeks is not really a lot of time to, like, formulate a gameplan and do all this drilling that I typically do," Wells said. "It's making my weapons as sharp as possible, and then go in there and dice him up when he stands in front of me."

Wells will certainly have the benefit of a supportive crowd in the building. The New Jersey native has a handful of previous contests in the venue and knows it's always a special feel.

"This is my favorite place to fight at," Wells said. "One, the Hard Rock, itself, is beautiful. CFFC always puts on a great promotion, so the product looks very good, so when you have friends and family come, it really feels professional – and again, everybody always packs the house when we go to Atlantic City.

"A lot of guys that I cross-train with at Dante Rivera's and Nick Catone's are always on these cards, as well, so it's like we have a little gang in the back, just waiting to go out and scrap, and it feels really fun."

A scrap is exactly what you can expect anytime Wells steps in the cage, and he insists this time around will be no different. Undefeated opponent, late replacement, whatever. Bring it.

"Expect violence," Wells said. "I'm trying to get called up to the next level, whether that's Bellator and PFL or that's the UFC. All those big shows, the promoters have made it very, very clear that they're looking for guys with finishes on their record, so that's what I'm trying to add to my record. I'm looking to punish every single mistake that this guy makes on his own and the ones that I create for him.

"I want to show the improvements that I've been making over the last year or so. I feel like I've gotten significantly better since the last time that I've competed. I haven't had this much jump in skill in this period of time in a few years, so I'm really excited to showcase that."

Wells has developed a reputation of exciting fights, with his entire professional career playing out under the CFFC banner. While he was gutted to withdraw from his planned appearance earlier this year, "Chopper" believes he's now dialed in and ready to deliver something special at CFFC 134, and it's something you won't want to miss.

"I always appreciate you guys taking your time and spending your money to come out and watch it, or taking your time when you're at home putting on UFC FIGHT PASS," Wells said. "You're going to see a different Frank Wells. Whatever you've watched the last four years in CFFC is not the guy that you are going to see. It's going to be a good show."
