CFFC Match Day results: Luke Surber claims OW belt as Oklahoma State outlasts gritty Little Rock challenge
Upstart Trojans took early lead, but Cowboys' depth delivers dual win, 25-13, on UFC FIGHT PASS.
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – The Little Rock Trojans continue to provide one of the most amazing stories in college wrestling, building a successful program from scratch in rapid time, but on Saturday, the Oklahoma State Cowboys were able to flex their muscle over the final five matches to take home a 25-13 win in the latest edition of CFFC Match Day.
The NCAA Division I wrestling dual streamed live on UFC FIGHT PASS from the Jack Stephens Center, with an announced attendance of 2,143 fans, setting a record for the Trojans.
Oklahoma State opened quickly at 125 pounds, with No. 4-ranked Troy Spratley dominating Jayden Carson to take home a technical fall, but Little Rock immediately bounced back, with returning All-American Nasir Bailey scoring bonus points of his own with a 13-0 major decision to keep the Trojans close early.
Tagen Jamison answered at 141, scoring Oklahoma State's second victory of the day with an 8-2 decision win, but Little Rock refused to back down, with Jordan Williams taking home a hard-fought and emotional win over former roommate Carter Young via tiebreaker, and then No. 17 Matty Bianchi providing one of the day's most amazing highlights with a pin over No. 12-ranked Caleb Fish, giving the Trojans a 13-8 lead over the most prolific team in college wrestling history.
In the second half of the dual, the No. 2-ranked Cowboys flexed their might, taking home four straight decisions at one point, capped off by a grinding 5-4 decision by Luke Surber, who was given the day's Outstanding Wrestler belt for the win over returning All-American and former OW winner Stephen Little.
With the result of the dual already secured, two-time All-American Wyatt Hendrickson added to the tally with a dominant 16-1 technical fall at heavyweight, and the Cowboys returned to Stillwater still undefeated on the season.
Afterward, first-season head coach and wrestling legend David Taylor credited his final five wrestlers for their effort in closing out a spirited Trojans team.
“Our upperclassmen and second half of our lineup, they've been crucial for us in a handful of duals this year, and today they were able to come through for us again,” Taylor said.
