CFFC BJJ 14 results: Luke Fernandez claims third CFFC title; Junny Ocasio retains in style

Newly rebranded CFFC BJJ event features statement wins in title fights, live on UFC FIGHT PASS.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The organization formerly known as FURY Professional Grappling saw two men make massive statements with their performances in the featured bouts of CFFC BJJ 14.

In the night's headliner, reigning CFFC MMA light heavyweight champion Luke Fernandez claimed the inaugural CFFC BJJ cruiserweight title, while defending bantamweight titleholder Junny Ocasio held on to his belt while also earning a bit of revenge against a familiar foe in the evening's co-feature.

The two championship matches headlined Friday's event, which streamed live on UFC FIGHT PASS from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City.

In the headliner, Fernandez took on eight-time UFC veteran Phil Hawes, who stepped in on less than one week's notice to replace an injured Pat Downey, for the inaugural cruiserweight belt. It was a fierce battle of two powerful wrestlers, with Fernandez enjoying a bit of a size advantage but Hawes boasting a more decorated pedigree as a former junior college national champion and NCAA Division I vet.

After nearly half of regulation was spent hand-fighting and in collar ties, Hawes eventually elected to take a seat, and Fernandez settled into side control. The two traded attacks on the floor before eventually moving back to the feet, where Fernandez shot in on a single, only to be countered beautifully by Hawes, who ended up on top. Unable to advance, Hawes eventually moved back to the feet, and it would prove to be his undoing.

As his opponent followed to a standing position, Hawes shot for the takedown. However, Fernandez stuffed it, controlled from the front headlock position and locked up an anaconda choke, dropping to the canvas and squeezing for the tap at the 6:41 mark of regulation.

With the victory, Fernandez claimed the CFFC BJJ cruiserweight title belt, adding to his current CFFC MMA light heavyweight championship, as well as the CFFC NextGen title he earned as an amateur. Afterward, Fernandez said he was thrilled with the result as proof of his development as a complete fighter.

"I think it just shows that the progression is real," Fernandez told Morgan Werth. "For those that don't know, I started here as an amateur. You guys saw me learn every fight, every match, and now I'm getting to show my jiu-jitsu class under FURY Grappling, and I'm very thankful for that, so it's just been awesome."

Meanwhile, the night's co-main event saw Ocasio get even with Joey Diehl with a sneaky toe hold, working from a leg entanglement and simply reaching back with his right hand and pressuring his opponent's left foot in stunningly quick fashion to earn the tap and defend his title.

"I wanted to get the win and get the fight back," Ocasio told Werth after the win. "Joey's one of my only losses probably in the last three years, and not only did he beat me, he was able to leglock me, so it's something that I really wanted to get back."

One result on the night's main card was changed following the initial announcement, as referee Christian Ruggeri's video review showed that a golden score awarded to Sergio Vilas was improperly assessed with just one of the athlete's hooks in place. Therefore his victory over Andrew Kochel was changed to a no contest.
