CFFC 157's Christian Bobe confident ahead of first main-event booking: 'I feel like I belong here'
Bobe faces Abdysamat Malakanov at Friday's event at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City and live on UFC FIGHT PASS
Christian Bobe has competed 12 times under the Cage Fury Fighting Championships banner, fighting twice as an amateur and five times as a pro, to go along with five CFFC BJJ appearances, as well. But on Friday night, he'll be at the top of the card for the very first time.
It's a massive opportunity for the 27-year-old Philadelphia native, as he not only competes in the main event of CFFC 157 but also challenges for the vacant CFFC featherweight title. Bobe acknowledges the importance of the evening but believes he's getting this moment at exactly the right time.
"It's certainly the biggest fight of my career so far, but it feels right," Bobe said. "I feel like I belong here. I feel like I've belonged here for a while. I just had to put the performances on and get into this position, but yeah, it feels right. I'm excited, and I'm ready to go out there and win this belt."
Bobe (4-1 MMA, 4-1 CFFC) faces promotional newcomer Abdysamat Malakanov (4-1 MMA, 0-0 CFFC) in Friday's headliner, which streams live on UFC FIGHT PASS from New Jersey's Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City. It's a full circle moment for the lifelong wrestler who remembers attending his first CFFC event with friend and professional boxer Christian Carto in 2017 and watching Sean Brady – who is now a teammate – competing for CFFC gold.
Bobe was so taken by the sport, he knew he had to give it a go.
"I considered boxing, but I had the grappling background," Bobe explained. "I found Jonavin Webb's gym, and I went in there. I think I fought six months into my training. I was like a blue belt. I think I actually might've been a white belt. I took my first amateur fight, and I never looked back."
It wasn't all smooth sailing. Bobe suffered a pair of losses in his amateur run. There was also a two-and-a-half years away from MMA to repair a torn ACL. There was a disappointing decision loss to Shaun Stant in 2025. But after each setback, Bobe seemed to level up, and he credits his team for helping him hone in the mental focus necessary to succeed in the sport, as witnessed by his current run of three straight submission wins.
"I think anybody that is really involved in the fight community knows that fighting is 99 percent mental, you know – maybe even 100 percent," Bobe explained. "Even in the Stant fight, I about had him out of there three, four times, and I was just battling with myself in that fight, you know? Other things went on, too, but really it was a mental thing, and the two losses as an amateur, same exact thing. I went out there a shell of myself.
"Realistically, in my mind, I should have never lost a fight. All three of my career losses really are the mental part of it, and I think that I've just found that click, you know? I've found the way to go out there and be free and be present just let it fly."
Bobe will need that focus on Friday, as he faces Team Alpha Male's Malakanov, a Kyrgyzstan native now living and training in California. Bobe is aware of the challenges his opponent presents but is confident he'll take home the title on Friday night.
"I think that this is my journey, and I think that this is my time, and nobody's going to take this opportunity from me," Bobe said. "I've been 10 years into this game now, and it doesn't matter who's in front of me. I'm going go out there and I'm going to perform, and God willing, I'm going to find a finish."
CFFC titles generally do result in UFC invitations, whether it be to Dana White's Contender Series, "The Ultimate Fighter," or straight to the big show. With the organization set to visit Philadelphia on August 15 for UFC 330, the excitement about what's possible rises even higher.
But none of that matters if Bobe doesn't deliver in this moment, the last man to talk into the cage on Friday night. Fortunately for him, Bobe is certain that's exactly how it's going to unfold.
"If you don't know, tune in, guys," Bobe said "I'm one of the best featherweights in the world outside of the UFC. I really am, and winning this CFFC title, it solidifies me as that.
"I'm going to get my hand raised, and I'm going to be the featherweight champion of the world, and I'm going to be one of them next guys that gets into the UFC."
