For champ Junny Ocasio, CFFC BJJ 15 offers a chance to right a few wrongs in rematch with Estevan Martinez
Ocasio puts title on line at Saturday's event in Philadelphia and seeks better performance the second time around
Reigning bantamweight champion Junny Ocasio didn't initially expect to compete at Saturday's CFFC BJJ 15 event, but when matchmaker Jonavin Webb did reach out, it turned out to be an opportunity he simply couldn't refuse.
"It's a very intriguing match that got dropped on my lap where I didn't think the matchups were gonna work out leading to this event," Ocasio explained. "Then I think last second, Jonavin was like, 'Hey look, we do him,' and I went back to my team and we talked about it, and we were just like, 'Yeah, you know, like we could run that one back.'"
"Him" turned out to be Estevan Martinez, who previously crossed paths with Ocasio at the IBJJF's Orlando Open in 2021. With neither man able to secure a submission in the match, Ocasio was awarded a referee's decision, but it was one that didn't sit well with him.
"I was a very different competitor then, and we fought and I won, but it was one of those matches that you win on the points or the advantage, but in my heart, I felt like I did not fight to my potential," Ocasio said. "I felt like I went below my standard, and I felt like he did a good job scrambling and making me miss at moments.
"I felt like for me, when I walked away from that fight, I had won, which is great, but it's one of those fights that you win and you're like, 'Man, in my heart, I lost that one' because I didn't fight to the way I know I could fight."
Martinez would go on to win gold at at both the IBJJF World Championships and Pan American Championships in 2021, so the result was still impressive for Ocasio, regardless of his personal satisfaction.
Still, Ocasio holds himself to an incredibly high standard, and he's anxious to get a second crack at Martinez in the co-main event of Saturday's card, which streams live on UFC FIGHT PASS from Philadelphia's 2300 Arena following prelims that stream on OnlyFans.com/cffcmma.
Given their familiarity, not to mention Martinez's natural style, Ocasio is expecting it to be an exciting clash.
"I've never seen that kid stall in my life," Ocasio said. "I think he's going to come forward. He's not afraid of me. He's fought me before. He barely lost that one, so I assume he's going to try to come at me.
"I'm pretty sure he thinks he could beat me, so this is all intriguing. I'm sure he's going to entertain the fans. I'm going to entertain you, but I'm also going to go after the win."
It's exactly the type of matches Ocasio is seeking at this point in his career. After claiming his own IBJJ World Championship in 2023, not to mention a pair of Pan American and European titles, as well, Ocasio is seeking the biggest opportunities available to him against the most intriguing names possible.
He's competing for the third time in five months under the CFFC BJJ banner, picking up submission wins in his first two appearances. Perhaps an invitation to UFC BJJ could lie on the horizon – after all, he did go the distance in a 2021 clash with UFC BJJ champ Mikey Musumeci.
Ocasio will let all that sort itself out in the aftermath. For now, he simply wants to go deliver another spectacular result.
"I want to tell all my fans, man, thank you so much for watching me on UFC FIGHT PASS," Ocasio said. "I always aim to come on UFC FIGHT PASS and deliver my absolute best performance, as I do every time I come out.”
