Taylor Hishaw brimming with confidence as she seeks second title at CFFC BJJ 15: 'It's going to be light work'
After flyweight tournament win in May, Hishaw moves up to 135 pounds at Saturday's event at Philadelphia's 2300 Arena
At just 18 years old, Taylor Hishaw isn't letting her age stand in the way of her goals. Take, for instance, her two victories in a single night this past May to claim the inaugural CFFC BJJ flyweight title. Quite the accomplishment, but one that Hishaw simply expected of herself.
"Overall, winning the tournament, it was like, 'Oh my gosh. I was just on CFFC BJJ,’" Hishaw said. "So it was a big thing, but beating the people that were in the bracket was not a big thing because I literally had it already made up in my mind. I'm like, 'I'm already finna beat these girls.' Like that money is already mine, and that's just how I think all the time.
"It's not like a personal thing, that's just how I am."
Hishaw brings that same type of energy into Saturday's CFFC BJJ 15 event, where she moves up 10 pounds in hopes of also claiming the promotion's inaugural women's bantamweight title, as well. Hishaw faces Nicole Mathew on the card, which streams live on UFC FIGHT PASS from Philadelphia's 2300 Arena following prelims that stream on OnlyFans.com/cffcmma.
Both women are ranked in the top 15 of the division in Jits Magazine's latest No Gi world rankings – Hishaw at No. 10 and Mathew at No. 14 – but Hishaw says the opponent's name is irrelevant.
"It's always goes the same: takedown," Hishaw said. "If they don't get taken down, they pull, I pass, and there's either a sub or I literally just dominate them the whole time.
"There's no like, 'Oh, what if this happens?' It always goes the same way every time, so there's nothing to be concerned about."
Should she prove victorious, Hishaw would firmly establish herself as one of the premier grapplers on the entire CFFC BJJ roster and could very well become a top candidate for a UFC BJJ opportunity, as well.
You can bet that Hishaw will be happy to answer that call whenever it comes in, regardless of her young age. Until then, she says she plans on collecting all the hardware she's offered, and she doesn't plan on sharing her new toys.
"Anybody who wants to come and try to get the belt from me, they can come and try to get it," Hishaw said. Because listen, once I have a belt, I ain't never lost a belt."
First things first, and Hishaw has to get the job done against Mathew. It's a stern challenge, to be sure, but Hishaw believes the result is already written.
"Of course I like a quick sub," Hishaw said. "Everybody likes that quick sub, but if I do have to ride it out, that's never been a problem. I'm expecting a sub, but either way this goes, it's going to be light work."
